Life direction through life skills

Moral Compass is an outdoor education initiative, designed to teach hunting, survival and life skills.
It is also a mentoring programme, developing essential character traits to survive and thrive through life’s challenges.

Welcome to Moral Compass

Moral Compass is a charitable organisation based in the Canterbury region of New Zealand that endeavours to identify need in the community through partnership and relationship.

New Zealand has many vulnerable young people; most of these adolescents are unequipped to face the challenges thrown their way. They find themselves making decisions based on limited information, taking advice from peers with often little or no support from trusted adults. If you find yourself struggling with mental health and need someone to talk to, call 1737 on 1737 or YouthLine on 0800 376 633.

Peter Reynolds (Razor), founder of Moral Compass says, “I learnt as a British Army Paratrooper that we all have a moral compass, in spite of where we’ve come from or the decisions we’ve made. I would like to pass on my knowledge and experience to help resource young people to succeed, no matter how difficult their current circumstances are”.

Along with teaching practical skills, Moral Compass is designed to give hope to struggling youth and show them there is more to life than fast food, alcohol and drugs. By giving young people a structured outdoor experience with highly-trained adults, the aim is to help them develop their moral compass so they can begin positively building towards their future.

Life has its ups and downs. We believe it is important not to pretend we are or have to be perfect in any way. That’s why we wanted and are happy to have a bloopers section for Moral Compass. Rolleston’s Peter ‘Razor’ Reynolds…leading the way for teens.

Recently Peter 'Razor' Reynolds from Moral Compass was featured on TVNZ's 7 Sharp to help generate interest in the Charity and create awareness around the need for more country back blocks to use for facilitating Moral Compass's great work in the community. The video shows the great work that is done and includes testimonies from some of the teens who have benefited from what Moral Compass does.

ADHD and struggling

I was fortunate enough to witness this mentoring programme in person and I would like to share what I saw, felt and continue to see develop in my son since the trip.

My son has had an unfair childhood to put it mildly, he has not seen his biological mother for over half his life, he heard and saw things no child should.  The court and Child protective services where I live awarded me full custody so I could try and repair the damage done as best I could.  Diagnosed with severe ADHD and struggling with school my son had been “asked to leave” four different schools and therefore his friends each time.  He had also lost any relationship with his mother.  The long-term effects and challenges for my son are ongoing but the unique skill and experience that Peter “Razor” Reynolds shared has had a lasting effect.

Razor told me that he sees his job as saving lives, not just the individual themselves but also the people that are then affected by that person going forwards.  Razor’s advice is unique but so is his perspective, his ability to connect with my son through their similarities was uncanny.  He not only gave hope through being the example to learn from but more than that, they worked as a team and my son really listened (not his usual style).

My son has a new perspective, he has seen outside of the bubble he lives in and that means he now knows that there are options outside of following the path that leads so many kids to the wrong decisions.  If you feel like you have no choice but to go down the wrong path, then you need Moral Compass.

Razor genuinely cares, he lives for experiences that test him but most importantly cares about the success of our youth…..  they are the future after all.

Quotes from my son, who said he felt “accomplished” when I asked for some feedback

“I liked the focus, stillness and quietness” as I mentioned, he has ADHD so this was a shocker

“I feel inspired to go out more and explore”

My personal favorite “I can do anything!”

A great time was had!

Hi Peter,

Thank you so much for taking me and my daughter Freya out for 2 days hunting. Although I did not make it to the top you took Freya and got a pig she loved every minute of it. It was great to see her away from the play station and walking up and down the hills. You gave her so much confidence and taught her lots and she keeps asking when can we do it again. My knees are almost better after the operation and you did promise me that you will get me to the top. Thanks again a great time was had even the cheesie sausages at 12.00 at night !!!

Many thanks,

James Herdman

Letter of Support

I am writing to you regarding a letter of support for Peter and Jemma Reynolds and their Charity, Moral Compass.

Moral Compass has a guiding principle, of teaching young people how to develop and implement essential character traits into their everyday lives, which in turn will help these young people survive and thrive when life throw’s a curve ball at them. This guiding principle cannot be undervalued and is the driving force behind Peter starting Moral Compass, and with your help, implementing real change in the lives of the young people Peter comes in contact with.

Peter’s energy and passion for this project is infectious. Peter is the right man at the right time to implement a significant positive influence into the lives of the young people I see each day. Peter is very relatable, builds a rapport with people of all ages quickly and easily and is driven to make a real change in the young people. Peter has completed his due diligence through local consultation. Peter has employed a Health and Safety expert to collate and coordinate his Safety Risk Management Plan, which in this day and age is crucial in the outdoors. It is with great excitement that Peter has come to the correct conclusion that the skill set, knowledge and expertise he has can be of use to underprivileged teens now and in the future.

Without question I fully support Peter and Jemma and their Charity Moral Compass in this new venture. My students and I cannot wait for Peter to be in a position to start the practical side of Moral Compass, with 90% of my students salivating at the opportunity of being taught, mentored and encouraged by Peter in the outdoors, hunting and fishing. I trust Peter implicitly. I do not hesitate in placing my students and my own children in his care, hunting and fishing. I see the heart and character of the man, and his desire to help young people. I support and encourage Peter and Jemma and look forward to New Zealand Communities Growth Trust doing the same.

Please do not hesitate to contact if further clarification is required.

Yours sincerely,
Jimmy Finlayson

Thank You!

Dear Razor – Moral Compass –

I just want to take the opportunity to thank you for the weekend outdoor experience. This was just what the doctor ordered as the people would say.

Had a few challenges thrown my way in life? Just to name a few:
 Being a person that never know my father and lost my mom at the age of 15.
 Put a HUGE effort in to be a professional sports person. Played for the Bulls and got a change to go and play trails for the Queensland Reds. Then got a career ending injuries.
 Then made the decision to leave my country of birth and move just to give my kids a better future.
 Starting up a business two months before world pandemic Covid-19.

I am full understand the need for Moral Compass – Aotearoa - . A few things I appreciated about this.

The wonderful quite time & beautiful surroundings. The conversations we had during the ATV ride and seeing the dogs do their thing. Time spend at night talking around the table at feeing time.

This gave me a mental break and can honestly say after this experience I feel that I got not just a mentor, but a FRIEND. I know that this is your passion and just want to thank you for just being yourself on this experience. Not once did it felt that you are a mentor, teacher, or instructor.
I have and would suggest this experience for all my professional sportsman / women. That feel the stress about performing top level from a young age.

Sincerely,
Herman Pieterse

Breath-taking...

My names is Carter, and I am 19 years old. I have been lucky enough to be able to go on a trip with
Moral Compass. As a young adult this experience was breath‐taking. I was able to experience the
outdoors in its raw form while in safe hands!

The owner of the Charity, Peter, makes the overall experience better as well, his drive and passion
for hunting and the outdoors is infectious, I couldn’t help being fully emersed in the environment.
This charity is going to have such a positive impact on the young kids who experience it, the mental
clarity you experience in the outdoors is exactly what is missing from my generation and exactly
what Moral Compass can offer.

I whole heartedly trust Peter with my life on the trips, and would not want to be mentored by
anyone else. His drive for this to succeed is purely genuine and I hope you will be able to help make
this happen.

Kind regards,
Carter Emtage‐McIntyre

Letter of Support

It is my pleasure to write this letter in support of the proposal by Moral Compass being submitted to the Selwyn District Councils Community Services Fund to purchase equipment to help start up this Charitable Organisation.

I have known Peter for about 18 months. I have had many discussions with him since he came up with the idea for the Moral Compass Charity and how he will be able to offer support to the Selwyn Community by providing outdoor education and recreational opportunities to them through the program. He has worked hard on getting the charity registered with the Charities Services and I truly believe with his passion, knowledge and experience he will be able to help resource young people to succeed, no matter how difficult their current circumstances are!

In conclusion, I fully support the efforts of Peter and the other trustees of Moral Compass as they seek external funding to support a program designed help vulnerable young people by giving them a structured outdoor experience with highly-trained adults, with the aim to help them develop their moral compass so they can begin positively building towards their future.

Yours Sincerely,
Jay Geldard

I have known Peter for a while now and have had many discussions with him since he came up with the idea for the Moral Compass Charity. I have been out on a couple of trips with him where he has given me a sample of the day out that he will be offering these young people. I believe this is a great idea to engage with the young people of the Selwyn community and help encourage them in physical activity and to develop healthy habits and lifestyles. He has worked hard on getting the charity registered with the Charities Services and I truly believe with his passion, knowledge and experience he will be able to help resource young people to succeed, no matter how difficult their current circumstances are!
